What Is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a term used to describe an abnormal curvature of the spine from side to side. Even though your spine should have some degree of curvature in it, this curvature should be from front to back, and it should be relatively mild. If your spine curves from side to side, you may have scoliosis.

Similar to other conditions, scoliosis can vary markedly in terms of its scope and severity. There are some people who develop scoliosis because of a chronic medical condition, such as cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy. Then, there are other people who develop scoliosis later in life due to other factors.

Even though most cases of scoliosis are mild, some cases can get worse, particularly as children get older. Severe scoliosis can have a significant impact on someone's mobility. That is why it is always better for us to treat scoliosis as quickly as possible.

What Are the Symptoms of Scoliosis?

There are several signs and symptoms that someone could have scoliosis. Some of the most common examples include:

  • When you stand straight up, your shoulders should be even. If they are not even, it could be a sign of scoliosis.
  • One shoulder break may appear to be more prominent than the other.
  • The pelvis may be slightly tilted to the side when standing up straight.
  • Scoliosis can also cause one side of the rib cage to jut out.
  • Severe forms of scoliosis can lead to digestive issues and cardiovascular complications.

At Estner Injury Centers, a chiropractor from our team would be happy to help you.

How Can a Chiropractor Treat Scoliosis?

There are several ways we can treat scoliosis. First, we will take a look at the alignment of the vertebrae, and we can use manual therapy to make sure they are in the proper locations.

Then, we can use corrective exercises to strengthen muscles around the spine, making sure that your spine has the necessary support. This can also help your spine straighten out.

Finally, we can also talk about assistive devices, such as braces, that can gradually shift the spine back into the right alignment. We will do everything we can to help you avoid surgery.
